While most of these devices are imported from China, there are some very reliable products that are made in India. What is GPS ? The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. space-based global navigation satellite system. It provides reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to worldwide users on a continuous basis in all weather, day and night, anywhere on or near the Earth. GPS is made up of three parts: between 24 and 32 satellites orbiting the Earth, four control and monitoring stations on Earth, and the GPS receivers owned by users. GPS satellites broadcast signals from space that are used by GPS receivers to provide three-dimensional location (latitude, longitude, and altitude) plus the time. GPS has become a mainstay of transportation systems worldwide, providing navigation for aviation, ground, and maritime operations. Disaster relief and emergency services depend upon GPS for location and timing capabilities in their life-saving missions. How the GPS Tracking System works ? GPS Tracking System uses the GPS signals to pin point where the particular asset it. For example, if the GPS Tracking hardware is fitted in a vehicle, the location of the vehicle is calculated by the hardware. Then the device will have to send the location co-ordinates to a GIS software. Various methodologies are used to get these data from the device to the server. In earlier days, these are offline or called offline trackers. In this, the vehicle has to comeback to the base, where these devices are removed and connected to a computer to retrieve the location data from the device and manually upload it to the server. Latter on, there were modems in the server which will dial into the device using GSM technology and pull all the data that were available. The biggest disadvantage of this is that when the GSM signals are not available during the pulling poll intervals, it becomes hard to get the tracking data on time. To over come this, the data pushers were invented. The GPS Tracking device would push the data to the server whenever it has the data and also the GSM Signals. Intially data pushers used SMS to push the data and to the server, but it was very unreliable where some of the SMSs were lost. So, the latest devices use GPRS to establish a reliable TCP connection to the server, push the data and get an acknowledgement. This is the most reliable method of transferring the location data to the GIS Server.   Once the location data is available in the server, it becomes the innovative mind to present the user with information in different way. The requirement of the users would vary from industry to industry. For some, speed of the vehicle is critical and for some the stoppage is critical.
